Citizen Indians: Native American Intellectuals, Race and Reform examines the role of American Indian intellectuals and reformers such as Gertrude Bonnin, Charles Eastman, and Arthur C. Parker during the American Progressive era. These middle class individuals were the critical thinkers of the times when Native Americas needed champions for their cause fighting against land allotment, treaty process, the removal of Indian children to boarding schools, and the general denial of citizenship to American Indians by government. The author focuses on the Society of American Indians founded in 1911 and comprised of people such as Chief Simon Pokagon, Daniel La France, Gertrude Bonnin, and Luther Standing Bear who worked to resist assimilation.
