Description

Nicimos: The Last Rez Christmas Story This Christmas season, things have gone awry for the kohkoms of Kiwetinohk. Clare Bear is engaged to be married, Zula Merasty is moving off-reserve and Sihkos Sinclare is in jail. It all comes to fruition at Clare's stagette. Playwright Curtis Peeteetuce is Cree from the Beardy's & Okemasis First Nation. Since 2001, he has had the honour of working with many talented artists in theatre, radio drama, music and film. Curtis is the playwright of the popular Rez Christmas story series, which has been presented since 2001. In this final humour-filled entry the three Kohkoms (grandmothers) from a Cree First Nation are at it again as their lives are all in flux as each woman's life is facing major changes. Nicimos (nee-chee-moose) means sweetheart in the Cree language and the word is most appropriate for the lives of the three women. Think - Golden Girls TV program meets the Rez. The author explained, "Christmas is a hard time for a lot of people it doesn't matter what race or background you come from it can be a struggle. These stories really inspire the community to say it's not about the materialism, it's about each other. Every Christmas story we have ever written has had the message that Christmas is about family and friends." The playwright believes this story is ideal for Aboriginal secondary level students to perform and offers the story to any group interested in staging it.
