Thunder on the Plains is one of the titles in 7th Generations' PathFinders Series. This series of novels are known as high/low books—written at a lower reading level but with high-interest, age-appropriate plots. Designed for reluctant readers, these books feature linear story lines, limited vocabulary and short sentences. The layout and print size also contribute in making the books easier to read. This 121-page accessible novel offers readers an introduction to an urban Native American student who reluctantly returns to the rez to spend a summer with his uncle. Danny Wind is a Cheyenne middle school student who is dealing with his grief over the sudden death of his father. Now he is living with a new, white father who has married his mom. The two just seem to have difficulty connecting as father and step-son. Dealing with a racist bully who calls him names, combined with a thoughtless school principal, finds Danny acting out and expelled from school. His exasperated mother and father deal with the issue by sending Danny off to the Cheyenne reservation where he will be attending a survival camp. Operated by his uncle the camp offers teens a chance to learn wilderness skills and cultural teachings. Danny is surprised to learn the rez has internet and TV. And a great deal more to offer a bored teen as he becomes involved in the survival camp activities and ends up saving a small herd of buffalo in the process. The camp is attended by Cheyenne students from the rez and Danny finds new friends including an unexpected girlfriend during the experience. Reading Level: 4.5
