Description

The Great Adventure of Dallas the Turtle and His Friends is a 17-page children's picture book written and illustrated Samantha Jocko for Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute. During her classes at the Institute, Samantha wrote the story after being inspired by her son and the family car trip across Canada. In this simple story, the author chooses several animal friends, a turtle, a snake, and a mouse that travel during the night time with the aid of the full moon. The friends find distractions along the way. While travelling to grandma turtle's house, the group of friends confronts a stranger who happens to be another friend, the fox. After discovering their friend the fox, the little band finds their way to grandmother's house. At the house a delicious pie is waiting. The friends find distractions along the way but eventually they arrive safely at their destination. The author introduces Ojibwe names for the various animal characters and the term for grandmother in this short story. Simple colour illustrations by the author clearly portray the adventures of the animal friends. Makes an excellent read-aloud for primary students. An added bonus with this book is the lyrics for a song that can accompany the story.
