Description
Great Women Leaders is part of the Women's Hall of Fame series published by feminist publishing house, Second Story Press. This collection of ten biographical profiles describes the lives and contributions of historical and present-day leaders. Most women profiled are from North America. Each 8-10 page biography outlines the woman's early years, her contribution, and the challenges she overcame. The women include Hatshepsut, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Emily Murphy, Therese Forget Casgrain, Golda Meir, Rosa Parks, Wangari Maathai, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Roberta Jamieson. The first female First Nation lawyer, Roberta Jamieson, is from Six Nations of the Grand River. Her career has taken her to being named Ontario Ombudsman, and in 2001 being elected chief councillor for Six Nations band council. With numerous awards, this woman continues to make contributions to First Nations in Canada. Each biography includes black and white photographs and a short reference list of sources. On the whole this is a useful book for senior elementary students completing projects about famous women leaders.
