Description

Susan Avingaq was born on the land and moved to the community of Igloolik, Nunavut, in the mid1970s. She loved camping and fishing, and often brought new people along to teach them these

land skills. She enjoyed sewing and teaching younger people important cultural practices. She was an extremely resourceful person, and believed resourcefulness is an important quality to pass on to the younger generation. She loved to share her stories with her many grandchildren. She thought that books are a wonderful way to preserve and share her knowledge and stories with more people.

Maren Vsetula is a mother and educator. She lived in Nunavut for thirteen years, and visits as much as she can. Amiel Sandland is an illustrator living in the Toronto area.

Nanuraq and Jeela can’t wait to visit their grandmother at her cabin! The cabin is cozy with the smell of bannock and a qulliq glowing. Grandma explains how she made the qulliq herself! Before long, the kids are pointing out other neat things around the cabin, like wooden dolls, bone toys, and a pincushion. The kids learn that Grandma has made all of these items out of found objects. Through exploring the cabin with their grandmother, the kids learn about the importance of being creative and not being wasteful.
