Description

Anti-Racism, Feminism, and Critical Approaches to Education includes essays from mostly Canadian contributors who address educational issues relevant to Aboriginal people, people of colour, and religious minorities in light of feminist and critical pedagogical theory. The authors are sensitive and responsive to the power relations operative in a setting, and they address the multiple and contradictory subjectivities of teachers and learners on the basis of race, gender, class, religion, ethnicity, age and ability. This collection of readings on recent advances in multicultural and anti-racist education addresses the issues of race, gender and class. Of particular interest for First Nations educators are the essays by Robert Regnier and Rick Hesch. Regnier uses the examples of the Meech Lake Accord and Elijah Harper, and the Mohawk Warriors at Oka as inspiration for comments on Aboriginal anti-racist pedagogy. Hesch uses his own experience teaching a Native Teacher Training course to reflect on the problems of a white, middle-class male teacher teaching an exclusively Aboriginal female student body. A scholarly text for all educators.
